Opening Discussion

  • What is a new habit you want to develop this year? What steps have you taken, or will take, to start that habit?

Read and Discuss

Psalm 119:15-18 NIV

15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

17 Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word.

18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

  • Why is the psalmist so passionate about God’s law, decrees, precepts (a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought), and word?
  • When you think about the Bible and God’s laws, what words come to mind?
  • How does your view of the Bible determine how you engage with the Bible?
  • What does it mean to meditate on God’s precepts?
  • What is difficult about considering God’s ways over your own?
  • What would it take in your life to get to a place of delighting over God’s word like the psalmist does?

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

  • Why did Paul want the Roman followers of Jesus to not conform to the world and to be transformed by renewing their minds?
  • What does it mean to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice to God?
  • What are some patterns of the world that people conform to?
  • What ways can you follow God’s will for your life instead of what the world says you should do?
  • How could reading the Bible and living it out help with renewing your mind?
  • What is an easy step you can take this week to offer yourself as a living sacrifice?

Apply it!

  • What spiritual habit can you start this year that will help you engage with God’s Word?
  • What are some things that keep you from engaging with the Bible?
  • What one simple step can you take each day to engage with the Bible? (Engaging is not just reading, but applying it to your life as well.)
  • Who is someone you can take this step with so you have accountability?

Memorize it!

Romans 12:2

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
