Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Yep, we finished the first book of Luke, and now we’re heading into the next one.
As we pray at church, let us also watch and learn how the Apostles prayed. Sometimes they did things that were recorded as historical. Here is what they did. Other times the things they did are recorded as an example for us to imitate. These events are prescriptive. This is how to do it. It’s not always clear which is which, but it’s a good problem to have, sometimes.
If you’re off work today, or to if you have run out of episodes to watch, read a big chunk of the book of Acts. It turns into a single long story if you read it like that.
This section is the intro. You know what happened to Jesus because you read the Gospel of Luke. Now, let’s see what happened to everyone after Jesus died and rose from the dead. Something happened, and this is the history of the people that lived it.
