Clear and Create a Path for the Lord in Your Life
Luke 19:28 ¶ And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Luke 19:29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,
Luke 19:30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
Luke 19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
Luke 19:32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.
Luke 19:33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
Luke 19:34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
Luke 19:35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
Luke 19:36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
When our children were small, the only way for my wife and I to watch a movie was to rush the kids to bed a little early and then hunker down with the iPad turned up just enough to watch Orcs and Trolls get their heads chopped off and all kinds of ghastly things.
Of course, we’d seldom make it through the whole movie without the iPad just getting too heavy to hold and our eyelids got too heavy too.
But the next morning, my first thoughts of the day were all about that movie. Was sew and sew lying? Where would the betrayal happen, because you knew it was coming! And what about that one thing that one guy said?
Sometimes we don’t realize how ridiculously simple it is to prepare ourselves for a day of thinking about something. All it took was a little attention at the right time.
The disciples kind of did a radical thing here. It’s like if I just showed up at your house and took your car. You’d come out and be like “Hey! You look a little familiar, so I know you’re not some crook, but why are you taking my car?” The disciples may have been a little familiar in Jerusalem. They had also been teaching and baptizing along with Jesus, remember?
“Oh don’t worry, Mark Weaver needs it. It’s cool.” I say, and then I drive off with your Camry and all is well.
But what happened next was even better. The people prepared the way for Jesus to enter Jerusalem. All it took was their cloak.
Like we spread out rose petals or a plastic runner before a bride at a wedding, the crowds prepared the way for Jesus with their cloaks. Can you imagine how cool that looked? A dirty road now covered with the mishmash of colors of all of our cloaks flattened out before Jesus?
A cloak was important. It was a big deal for sleep, for warmth, even for a little bit of protection from the weather. And they threw them down on the ground for a special entrance for Jesus.
We can do this every night before we go to bed. We can do it first thing when we wake up. Take every thought captive and train yourself, with joy, to think about Jesus when you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning.
It’s easier and more rewarding than you think. And God thinks great thoughts about you even more than that! (Zeph 3:17)
