INTRO

This marks week #2 of online service. On Sunday, Bret spoke about how our current circumstances point us to the fundamentals. For One Life, the fundamentals are Worship, Love, and Compassion. These fundamentals will lead our discussion today.

INTRO—FUNDAMENTALS

  1. What “fundamentals” is this current moment revealing? Not just in aspects of faith, but in regard to family, relationships, attention, finances.

  1. When you think about how you live out your faith . . . What would you say are the fundamentals of your personal faith? What practices do you prioritize? (i.e. prayer, service, reflection on scripture, loving neighbors, living in peace, etc.)

WORSHIP—LOOK UP

  1. Economists often describe our culture as an “attention economy”—meaning attention is a scarce resource to be attained. At the same time, theologians have suggested that in its simplest form, worship is what we give our attention to.

What is currently drawing your attention the most? As a result, what areas of your life are suffering from less attention? What is one practical thing you can do to secure some “attention” for your spiritual formation?

READ 2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

  1. In light of our current circumstances — What changes in your daily lived experience are causing you or tempting you to lose heart right now?

  1. What do you think it means to “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen?” How do we do that?

  1. W. Tozer said, “Faith is the gaze of a soul upon a saving God.” How does this quote from Tozer relate to the passage from 2 Corinthians and the anxiety of our current circumstances?

  1. Bret said that worship is not based on some ego trip from God, but our realistic response to who God is and the grace we’ve received. What do you think this means? Have you ever thought of worship as an ego trip of God?

LOVE—LOOK AROUND

  1. What does love look like in the current reality of social distancing?

  1. One of our core values is that we do life in groups and teams. If you are a part of one of groups or teams, in what way has the value of being on a group/team come to light in this new reality?

READ Galatians 6:10: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

  1. Bret challenged us to think of 3 One Lifer’s to reach out to a day during social distancing. For the sake of accountability, name one person that you will reach out to before the end of day today.

COMPASSION—LOOK OUT

  1. How is the current cultural moment an opportunity for the people of God (the “Church”)?

  1. Bret suggested that in this cultural moment, we have the opportunity to speak in ways we usually can’t. He said, we can go a lot deeper, a lot further, a lot quicker. Do you agree? If so, why do you think that is possible?

  1. What are some practical things we can do today to bring “light and hope” to a world that is characterized by uncertainty and anxiety right now? What does “light and hope” look like right now?

  1. Again, for the sake of accountability, name one person that you will reach out to outside of the church before the end of the day.

  1. How can we be praying for you now?
