Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Questions for Reflection:
This passage is known as the Shema. Shema is the Jewish word for “hear”, the first word of the prayer. What is the command in verse 5? How do you love God with your heart, soul and strength? The concept that Moses wanted to make sure the people of Israel understood was that they were called to love God with all of their life. It’s the same concept that we might hear as “Jesus wants to be lord over all your life, not just part of it.” Is there an area of your life where you are not fully loving God?
How would you summarize verses 6-9? Why do you think those instructions were given? We have a responsibility to not only believe and trust God. We have a responsibility to pass on what we know to others. Who have you shared your faith with recently? Who can you pray for today?
