Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:15-18a
15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Questions for Reflection:
Compare and contrast Paul with the other group that is preaching Christ. Are there any similarities beyond the message? What are the differences between the two? What motives were driving others to preach? How does Paul respond to these improper motives? What was most important to Paul?
Paul understood that there was nothing he could do about his rivals. He was in prison and they were attempting to discredit him. However, he was confident that in the midst of his struggle, God would work. One commentator wrote, “God works not merely in spite of but through adverse circumstances.” What mattered most to Paul was that God was at work. Where do you see God working around you? How can you play a part in that?
