The Call and Response of 3000 Believers
Acts 2:37–41
“For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter was preaching the Gospel that day to a huge crowd. He didn’t know what the result would be, but he knew what he needed to do and what to say at the time. It doesn’t say what percentage of the hearers believed, but by the time it was all said and done, 3,000 people had been baptized and become followers and believers in Christ.
It’s funny that culturally, Peter probably didn’t talk about baptism. He probably talked about Jesus’ death and resurrection. We don’t have all of what he said, but what we do have focuses on the saving power of Christ’s death and resurrection. Christ was crucified and is now living forever as a greater king and greater man than King David or Moses the Deliverer.
Every one of us is faced with that same question every day.
“What should we do [in response to what God has done]?”
Let’s all be part of the 3,000 that didn’t take any convincing. Let’s do whatever it takes to follow this God and His Savior Son. Let’s throw off whatever holds us back and respond to the God that didn’t hold Himself back.
