Opening Discussion

Read and Discuss

John 1:1-5,14

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  • What does this passage tell us about Jesus?
    • Why is Jesus called the Word?
  • What are some ways the darkness tries to overcome the light?
  • What are practical ways you can show the light of Jesus to others?

Extra Questions

  • What is significant about Jesus being around at the beginning and being part of Creation?
  • How can you be full of grace and truth in your life?
    • Do you tend to err on the grace side or the truth side more?
    • What can you do to balance that more this week?

Read Hebrews 4:12-16

12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession.15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.

  • What does the author of Hebrews mean when they say the word of God is sharper than any double edged sword?
  • Why might reading God’s word lead us to confess and repent?
  • Think of something you need to confess (you don’t need to say it outloud to the group). Who can you confess that to this week?
    • What is one verse you could work on memorizing to help you with that thing?

Extra Questions

  • How is God’s word living and effective in your life?
  • Why is it significant that Jesus was tempted but didn’t sin?
  • What is a bold prayer you can pray this week?

Memorize it!
