Proverbs 3:11-12
11 Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son, and do not loathe his discipline; 12
for the Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.
Hebrews 12:5-11
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons:
My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly or lose heart when you are reproved by him, 6 for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and punishes every son he receives.
7 Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline—which all receive—then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness. 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
- Why is it important to frame God’s discipline of us in the context of being His sons?
- What does it mean to endure suffering as discipline?
- What are some things God’s discipline does in our lives?
- How have you seen this to be true?
- Is there anything you’re going through right now that could be the Lord disciplining you?
Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. 7 Repeat them to your children.Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
- Why does Jesus consider verse 4 & 5 the greatest of all the commandments?
- What are some practical ways we can grow in our relationship with Jesus based on these verses? (sitting in your house, walking along the road, when you lie down and get up, writing them on the doorposts of your house, etc.)
- From that list you made, what is one area you could improve in this week?
- How will this help you grow in your relationship with Jesus?
- What will you do specifically?
Discipleship Questions
- Why are daily disciplines important in our relationship with Jesus?
- What story does your life tell?
- What is one thing you do daily that you could add a spiritual habit to? (brushing teeth, showering, driving to work/school, going to bed, etc.)
