Opening Discussion
- What’s a good habit you have and how did you start it?
Read and Discuss
Proverbs 6:6-8 (NLT)
6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! 7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, 8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
- Why would Solomon want people to watch ants and their work habits?
- What are some ways ants work to get food and build their colony?
- When it comes to change in your own life and starting good habits, what can the ant teach you?
- Thinking about engaging with the Bible on a daily basis, what’s a simple way to start or continue that habit?
Deuteronomy 17:18-20 NIV
18 When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. 19 It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees 20 and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
- Why would God want the king of Israel to write a copy of the law?
- How would learning the law and living it out have kept the king humble?
- Why is it necessary not to just hear God’s word, but put it into practice?
- Have you ever tried writing out scripture like the passage suggests?
- If so, what did you learn from it?
- What is one verse you could write down each day this week with the intention of learning it and applying it to your life?
John 17:1-3 NIV
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
- According to Jesus, what is eternal life?
- What are some ways you can get to know the only true God, and Jesus Christ?
- What habits or practices do you currently have in place to grow in your relationship with God?
- What is one habit you want to start when it comes to engaging in Bible reading?
- Engaging in the Bible is more than just reading it, but applying it to your life. How can you make sure you put into practice what you read?
Apply it!
- Who are some people you could engage in Bible reading with?
- When can you talk to them about meeting up to discuss the Bible?
- How often and when will you meet?
- If you already do this, who can you invite to join you?
Memorize it!
John 17:3- Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
