Opening Question
- Outside of the US, what has been the coolest place you’ve been or would like to go?
Read and Respond
Matthew 9:35-9:38 NLT
35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”
- Why did Jesus have compassion on the crowds?
- Who are the crowds in your life, those that are around, but sometimes overlooked by you?
- What does the phrase, “the harvest is great, but the workers are few,” mean?
- Why are there more people who want to hear the Good News of Jesus than want to actually go tell people about Jesus?
- What are some ways God will answer the prayer about sending more workers into the field?
- How might God use you to answer that prayer?
Matthew 10:1, 5-8 NLT
10:1 Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.
5 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, 6 but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep. 7 Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
- In light of the closing prayer of chapter 9, how does Jesus help answer His prayer?
- Who are some people in your life that you could encourage to share the Gospel with others?
- Why does Jesus tell the disciples to not go to the Gentiles or Samaritans?
- What are some reasons people may forget the Kingdom of God is near?
- Why might you forget the Kingdom of God is near?
- What does giving freely to others look like?
