Intro Question:

  • What is your favorite TV Dinner (frozen dinner/microwave meal)?
    • If you never ate one, which one would you pick to eat?

Lesson Intro:

Jesus often taught parables to help us understand the Kingdom of God and what it is like. This week Chris looked at two of those parables and discussed how every area of our life needs to come under the authority of God.

Read and Discuss

Luke 13:18-19 CSB

18 He said, therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like, and what can I compare it to? 19 It’s like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

  • Why does Jesus compare the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed?
  • What comes to mind when you think about the kingdom of God?
  • What were the Israelites thinking the kingdom of God would be like?
  • How is Jesus and the way He brought about the beginnings of the kingdom of God on earth similar to the mustard seed?
  • What is significant about the birds making their home in the branches?
  • Does the way you represent Jesus to those around you make them want to follow Jesus as well?

Luke 13:20-21 CSB

20 Again he said, “What can I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It’s like leaven that a woman took and mixed into fifty pounds of flour until all of it was leavened.”

  • What does Jesus compare the kingdom of God to in this parable?
  • How is the kingdom of God like yeast or leaven?
  • When it comes to your daily life, what parts are hard to center on Jesus?
  • Why is it important to let the Holy Spirit lead and guide you into the changes you need to make to get every area of your life under God’s control?
    • What might happen if you try to make the changes on your own?
  • What is an area you’ve let God have control over?
    • What have been the benefits of that?

Challenge Question:

  • What is a small step the Holy Spirit is leading you to take this week?

Memory Verse

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Closing Thoughts & Prayer

The Lord wants to do a work in us to change the world around us. Often we strive to make those changes on our own, but continually fail and fall back into old patterns. God wants to speak to you through His word. This week, find a verse that will help you in that area the Lord is leading you to surrender to Him.

Pray and ask God to show you those areas of your life you are still hanging on to and trying to fix by your own power.
