Intro Question: When is a time you got back at someone for something they did to you (this can be humorous)?

Lesson Intro:

This week we jump back into the book of Luke. Pastor Bret unpacks what Jesus says about suffering and how that should lead to repentance.

Read and Discuss:

Luke 13: 1-5 NASB

Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. And Jesus said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

  • Why did the people want to discuss suffering with Jesus?
  • When people go through suffering, why do we sometimes assume they deserve it?
  • How did Jesus respond to those asking Him about the suffering of others?
  • What are some things that have happened recently, in your life or the world around you, that make you question the suffering of others?
  • Why does Jesus end both accounts of suffering by saying “unless you repent, you will all likewise perish?”
  • What does “repentance” mean?
  • How does thinking about our own mortality and suffering push us towards repentance?

Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

  • What does Pauil say about suffering in these verses?
  • Is Paul telling us not to question God when suffering happens?
  • When Pastor Bret said, “Suffering isn’t just a mystery to figure out, it’s a reality to respond to” what did he mean?
  • Why is trying to figure out suffering a slippery slope?
  • When suffering is going on in your life, how do you respond?
  • What way can you respond that gives God glory in the midst of suffering?

Challenge Question:

  • Who is someone going through a rough time in their life that you can help remind them of God’s love for them this week?

Memory Verse:

Romans 11:33
33 Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

Closing prayer:

Pray that people would repent and follow Jesus. Pray that suffering would draw them closer to the Lord and not be an excuse to run away.
