Opening Discussion

  • Have you ever tried to grow plants or trees? How did it turn out?

Read and Discuss

Galatians 5:19-21

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Why are the works of the flesh obvious?
  • If someone claims to be a follower of Jesus and does some of these things, what would you say to them?
  • How can you help correct others’ behaviors while still making it about Jesus and not about just doing good things?

Extra Questions

  • Why do the things listed in this passage appeal to people?
  • What are some ways the things promise to bring happiness and fulfillment to your life?
  • How do these things actually lead into destruction, depression, and despair?
  • If you find yourself drifting towards one or more of these things, who is someone you could talk to?

Read Galatians 5:22-25 & 6:7-10

5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

6:7 Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, 8 because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.

  • How does the fruit of the Spirit fight against the list Paul made in verses 19-21?
  • Why does it take longer to sow and reap the benefits of the fruit of the spirit than it does to sow and reap the destruction from the flesh?
  • What are some ways you get tired of doing good?

Extra Questions

  • What does it look like to keep in step with the Spirit?
  • How is the biblical idea of reaping and sowing different from the idea of karma?

Discipleship Questions

  • What are some actions you can take this week to allow the fruit of the Spirit to grow in your life?
  • Who is someone that could hold you accountable so that you don’t stray back into the ways of the flesh?
