Opening Discussion
- Happy New Year! What is something you want to accomplish this month personally? Spiritually?
Read and Discuss
John 1:1-5,14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- Why does it matter that the Word became flesh?
- John says that people got to observe Jesus’ glory. What are some things you’ve observed about Jesus through the Bible?
- How did Jesus continue to shine His light in the midst of the darkness?
Mark 14:32-34
32 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he told his disciples,“Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 He said to them, “I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”
- Immediately after His last meal with the disciples, we find Jesus in this place of grief. What does this teach us about Jesus’ humanity?
- What did Jesus do when He was distressed and troubled?
- What can we learn from this when we are in a place of grief and hurting?
Extra Questions
- How did Jesus rely on those around Him to help him in his emotional pain?
- Why is it sometimes hard to talk to others about the pain you are feeling?
- What are some ways you can seek the Lord with friends?
Read Hebrews 4:12-16
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
- How did Jesus sympathize with our weakness and be tempted, but remain without sin?
- What are some unhealthy ways people deal with depression and anxiety?
- What can we learn from Jesus’ example on how to deal with depression in a positive way?
Extra Questions
- How can you approach God’s throne with boldness when you feel you are at your weakest?
- What are some things you need to receive mercy for right now?
Discipleship questions
- What is a situation that is causing you stress?
- How can you rely on the Lord and your faith community to help you through those things?
- Who is someone facing some major issues in their life?
- What can you do this week to show them the love of Christ and help them in their time of need?
- How can you keep showing up in their life besides just a one time help?
