12.17.23 Huddle

Onelifechurch   -

Hey Huddle leader! Just wanted to let you know of a few changes you will be seeing to the huddle. The top section is designed for those of you who use this as a tool to connect with your team. It should take you about 10-15 minutes to complete. The second part will include the top section, but with more discussion questions and possibly some more verses. The prayer portion will be at the end so if you do the top portion you will have to scroll down to the prayer section. At One Life we evaluate everything for continual improvement, so if you have any feedback on how to make the Huddle better please email [email protected]

Opening Discussion

  • If you could only eat one food for a whole year, what would you eat?

Shorter Version

Read Exodus 16:2-5,23-23,31CSB

Exodus 16:2-5

2 The entire Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!”  4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. This way I will test them to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.”

Exodus 16:21-23, 31

21 They gathered it every morning. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat, but when the sun grew hot, it melted. 22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, four quarts apiece, and all the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. 23 He told them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil, and set aside everything left over to be kept until morning.’”

31 The house of Israel named the substance manna. It resembled coriander seed, was white, and tasted like wafers made with honey.

  • Why would God only provide one type of food instead of a variety?
  • Why do people feel like they don’t have to rely on God in their life?
  • What are some ways you have to rely on God everyday?

Read Numbers 11:4-6; Deuteronomy 8:3

Numbers 11:4-6

4 The riffraff among them had a strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said, “Who will feed us meat? 5 We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. 6 But now our appetite is gone; there’s nothing to look at but this manna!”

Deuteronomy 8:3

3 He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  • Why did the Israelites focus on what they didn’t have, instead of what they did have?
  • What does it mean that “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord?”
  • What is something you can do this week to live more on every word that comes from God (the Bible)?

Discipleship questions

  • When it comes to reading the Bible, what hang-ups do you have or obstacles do you face?
  • How can you develop a practice of looking for ways God provides for you daily?
  • Who are some people that you can engage in Bible study with?
    • When can you do that this week with them?

Longer Version

Read Exodus 16:2-5,23-23,31CSB

Exodus 16:2-5

Exodus 16:21-23, 31

21 They gathered it every morning. 31 The house of Israel named the substance manna. It resembled coriander seed, was white, and tasted like wafers made with honey.

  • After all the miracles the Israelites had seen the Lord do, why did they still grumble and complain, instead of asking the Lord to provide?
  • Why would God only provide one type of food instead of a variety?
  • Why didn’t God allow them to store the manna from day to day?
  • What are some ways people feel like they have provided for themselves, but it’s actually God’s provision?
  • Why do people feel like they don’t have to rely on God in their life?
  • Do you feel like you have to rely on God for His provision for you everyday? Why or why not?
  • What are some things you provide for yourself everyday?
  • How can you shift your perspective to looking for the things God provides for you everyday?
    • Example: Maybe you bought your own food with your own money from a job you worked hard to get. What are some ways God equipped you to get that job?

  • How did the riffraff lead the Israelites astray?
  • Why did the Israelites focus on what they didn’t have, instead of what they did have?
  • What are some things in your life that it is easier to focus on what you don’t have instead of looking at what you do have?
  • How have riffraff in your life led you down a negative path?
  • When are some moments that it has been easy for you to become the riffraff?
  • What was God trying to teach the Israelites through the manna?
  • What does it mean that “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord?”
  • Do you view the Bible as something that you need to take in daily? Why or why not?
  • What is something you can do this week to live more on every word that comes from God (the Bible)?

Read John 6:26-36

26 Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set his seal of approval on him.”

28 “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked.

29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent.”

30 “What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you?” they asked. “What are you going to perform? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”

32 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 Then they said, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again. 36 But as I told you, you’ve seen me, and yet you do not believe.

  • Why was the crowd looking for Jesus?
  • What are some ways you might approach Jesus just wanting the benefits He gives, but not wanting to live how He asks you to?
  • When the people asked what they had to do to work their way into God’s presence, how was Jesus’ response different from what they were expecting?
  • The crowd had just eaten at the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 the day before. Why did the people want more evidence from Jesus than what they had already seen and benefited from?
  • What new perspective did Jesus give about manna?
  • What does Jesus mean by, “I am the bread of life?”
  • How can you learn to rely on Jesus more everyday?
  • What might change in your life if you treated Jesus like the bread of life?

Discipleship questions

  • When it comes to reading the Bible, what hang-ups do you have or obstacles do you face?
  • How can you develop a practice of looking for ways God provides for you daily?
  • Who are some people that you can engage in Bible study with?
    • When can you do that this week with them?

Memorize it!

John 6:35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.
