  • When is it easy to say thank you to someone?
  • When is it hard to say thank you to someone?

Luke 17:11-18 CSB

11 While traveling to Jerusalem, he passed between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 When he saw them, he told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were going, they were cleansed.

15 But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God. 16 He fell facedown at his feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan.

17 Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And he told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.”

  • Why did the leprous men ask for mercy and not healing?
  • Jesus often healed people in different ways. Why does he send the men to the priests instead of just healing them right there?
  • How did the guy who returned to Jesus glorify God?
  • What was significant about the healed man being a Samaritan?
  • Why did the other nine men not return to give glory to God?
  • What are some ways people give glory to God today?
  • What are some ways people fail to give glory to God?
  • Why do we pray about things, but when God answers those prayers, fail to acknowledge that God answered them?
  • Are there any particular areas where you forget to thank God and glorify Him?

John 6:28-29

28 “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked.

29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent.”

  • The crowd is asking Jesus how they can do God’s work. Why does Jesus tell them to believe in Him?
  • When we believe in Jesus, how does that help us glorify God and do His work?
  • How does belief spark obedience?

Apply it!

  • What’s something you can do this week to increase your faith?
  • What can you do today to start practicing glorifying and acknowledging God’s provision in your life?

Memorize it!

John 6:29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent.”

Prayer TACOS

Thank God for something you’ve never thanked Him for before

Adoration– worship the Lord and give glory to Him

Confess to the times the Lord has answered your prayers, but you haven’t acknowledged Him and given Him the glory

Others- Pray that the Lord would put someone in your path that you could help direct back to Him.

Self- Ask the Lord to help you be aware of the things He does for you every day so that you may glorify Him more

Closing Thoughts

When discussing this topic with a group of people, we were talking about how we will often pray for “traveling mercies”. I thought about how before a trip, my family and I will pray for safety while we travel. Rarely do we thank God when we arrive at our destination.

Why do I do that? Do I just pray that prayer, but on the inside think that God doesn’t do that much to get us there safely? Am I just repeating words I’ve heard others pray, but don’t really mean them?

If I were to be really honest with myself, many times I pray things but don’t really think God has much to do with it. Whether it’s traveling, healing, or someone hurting, I think that the thing I’m praying for has already been determined, so when I pray, it doesn’t matter. Then if that thing happens as I prayed for it, I just figure it was already planned that way so I don’t give God the glory for it.

So what can I do about this? I need to stop praying horoscope prayers. A horoscope is so general that if thousands of people read it, part of it would apply to them and then they think it’s amazing that someone predicted their future. A horoscope prayer is so general that the thing I’m praying about will most likely happen. But if I start praying specifically for someone or something, then when God answers that prayer I’d know it was from Him. Instead of praying for healing, I’ll pray that the doctor would call them that afternoon with good news.

This is where the John 6:8-9 passage comes into play because the more I believe in Jesus, the more I will do God’s work. And the more I know Jesus, the more I’ll know the things I need to pray specifically for. This week, listen to the Lord, believe in Jesus, and pray bold, specific prayers. Then, when you see God answers those prayers, run to Him in thanks and give glory to God.
