Opening Discussion:

  • What was something you believed as a kid that you found out later wasn’t true?

Read and Discuss

Genesis 3:1-7 CSB

1 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. 3 But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’”

4 “No! You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  • What were some things the devil did to deceive Eve and Adam?
  • Why did Adam and Eve give in to the temptation?
  • Why did Adam and Eve doubt God’s goodness and provision?
  • What are some reasons people today doubt God’s goodness and provision?
  • What are some reasons people give for walking away from their faith in Jesus?
  • When you’ve had doubts, what have you done to walk through those things?
  • What could Adam have done to help Eve out in this situation?
  • Do you know anyone who is deconstructing their faith? How can you help them this week?

Matthew 4:1-11 CSB

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4 He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will give his angels orders concerning you,

and they will support you with their hands

so that you will not strike

your foot against a stone.”

7 Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.”

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.

  • When Jesus was tempted by Satan, how did Jesus respond?
  • What were some things the deceiver did to try to trick Jesus?
  • Why didn’t Jesus doubt God’s goodness and provision?
  • How does Satan try to twist scripture, both in this passage, and in modern times?
  • When someone questions God’s Word, or when you have your own doubts, how do you find the truth?
  • Often when people go through deconstruction, why do they start with the premise that God, the Bible, and/or the church is at fault, instead of starting with the premise that God is the source of all truth?

Apply it!

  • What is something that you’ve had a problem with that deals with your faith in Christ? (This could be being hurt by the church, a passage in the Old Testament that makes you question the Bible’s validity, a trauma in your life that’s made you doubt God’s goodness, etc.)
    • Who is someone you could talk to about your doubts and problems?
    • When will you do that this week?
    • What prayer and study on your own do you need to do to work through this?

Memorize it!

Matthew 4:4 He [Jesus] answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Prayer TACOS

Thank the Lord for not giving into temptation, but showing us how to combat it when it comes our way.

Adoration- Spend time worshiping the Lord for being the way, the truth, and the life

Confess to those times that you let what the world says influence your beliefs more than what God says

Others- Pray that the Lord would allow you to have a conversation with someone this week that is walking through doubts in their faith

Self- Pray that the Lord would help you with doubts and problems you’ve been having with your own faith
