10.23.22 Huddle
Opening Question:
- What’s a hard truth that someone has told you? (This can be humorous, like your breath stank)
Read and Discuss
Luke 14:25-27 NASB 1995
25 Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
- Who is Jesus talking to in this passage?
- What would those in the crowd have thought of this statement?
- What does Jesus mean?
- In that time period, when Roman crucifixion was a horrible death penalty, what would “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple,” have meant to them?
- What does it look like in our daily lives to carry our own cross and follow after Jesus?
Luke 14:28-33
28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
- What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
- What is the cost of discipleship?
- What does Jesus mean by “none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions?”
- When you hear that phrase, what comes to mind?
- Do you start justifying why Jesus doesn’t really mean that?
- If you answered “yes” to the previous question, what might that show you the priority your possessions have in your life?
- Why might possessions hold us back from following Jesus?
Luke 14:34-35
34 “Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
- What is Jesus saying with this statement?
- What must we do to remain in Christ as His disciples?
- Why do we have to commit our entire lives to Jesus, and not just part of it?
- If you were in the crowd and heard Jesus say this entire passage (14:25-35), what would you think?
- Taking the whole passage into account, what is Jesus saying about being a disciple?
Challenge Questions
- What is holding you back from a full commitment to Jesus?
- If you are fully committed to following Him, what is something you can do this week to take a step closer to Jesus?
