The Songs Sung in Heaven
2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,
“Great and amazing are your deeds,
O Lord God the Almighty!
Just and true are your ways,
O King of the nations!
4 Who will not fear, O Lord,
and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
and worship you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
In this tremendous and terrifying scene in the throne room of God, did you notice the songs they are singing? It’s the end of the world already, and all kinds of wrath are being poured out in judgment on the earth, and the angels of God are singing the song of Moses and the song of Jesus.
We don’t really know what these songs are, but we have a hint. Deuteronomy 32 is known as “The Song of Moses” because it’s what Moses told everyone just before he died. It is a sort of song, in their culture and in their timeframe.
We don’t have an easy clue like that as to what the Song of the Lamb is, but there are other places where they sing it in the Bible.
We can infer from these that it’s about God’s salvation and deliverance. Moses saved God’s people from slavery in Egypt, and Jesus saved God’s people from slavery to sin. God has been in the deliverance and salvation business for a long time. It’s what He does.
This makes it difficult to make an image of God, doesn’t it? You can’t make anything out of gold that would be a rescuer and a free-er for so many generations. It would even be hard to make a symbol to represent such a thing because there is so much personality, compassion, action, wisdom, and perfection in God’s actions and ways. I can’t even fit it all into proper grammar!
But this is the God we worship. This is the One to whom we direct our awe.
We don’t typically use the word “righteous” in everyday conversation, but it means right. As in, someday we’ll see everything God did and we’ll see that it was just the exact right thing to do.
It’s deliverance and salvation. Everything God does comes back to that for His people in one way or another.
