7.31.22 Huddle
Message Recap
We continue our study in Luke by looking at Jesus’ harsh response to a prominent political leader, as well as His longing to show compassion on those who hated him.
Opening Question
- When did you respond well in a situation?
- When did you respond poorly to a situation? (This can be humorous)
Read and Respond
Luke 13:31-33
31 At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away and leave this place, because Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside Jerusalem.
- What was the goal of the Pharisees in telling Jesus that Herod wanted to kill Him?
- How did Jesus respond to the death threat from Herod?
- Why does Jesus call Herod a fox?
- Herod did things Jewish people did to gain their approval, while at the same time doing things that were very much against God’s commands. He just pretended to be friendly with the Jewish people to gain influence and power.
- What are some ways people might do that today?
Luke 13:34-35
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her young under her wings, and you were unwilling! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
- How does Jesus take what Herod did, and now make it about Jerusalem?
- What were some ways Jerusalem, God’s chosen people, disobeyed God?
- What did Jesus mean by wanting to gather them together like a hen gathers her young under her wings?
- Why were God’s people unwilling to be comforted and corrected by Him?
- What are some ways we push God away when He is wanting to correct and comfort us?
Challenge Question:
- What is one area of your life that may appear like you have it under control, but in reality you’re pushing God away? (This may be more of a reflection question, than an answer out loud question. However, I encourage you to find someone you can open up to about this struggle)
Memory Verse
Luke 13:34
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her young under her wings, and you were unwilling!
Closing Prayer
Thank God for being a God who pursues and loves even when we don’t deserve it
Adoration- Worship the Lord for comforting and correcting
Confess to those times you have been unwilling to follow the Lord’s leading in your life
Others- Pray for someone in your life who is making poor decisions in their life that you can help bring back to, or point them in the direction of Christ
Self- Ask the Lord to help you follow Him in every area of your life. And that you would be a person of integrity both in front of people and when no one is watching.
