Read and Discuss

Luke 14:1-6 CSB

1 One Sabbath, when he went in to eat at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching him closely. 2 There in front of him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid. 3 In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5 And to them, he said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 They could find no answer to these things.

  • Summarize what happens in this passage.
  • Why were the Pharisees watching Jesus closely?
  • Who are some people, or groups of people, who watch followers of Jesus closely today?
  • How did Jesus challenge the Pharisees traditions concerning Sabbath regulations?
  • How did Jesus try to correct their thinking?
  • What are some ways you can challenge other followers of Jesus, who may be heading in the wrong, direction, to pursue Jesus in every area of their life?

Read 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 CSB

2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 3 You show that you are Christ’s letter, delivered by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God—not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

  • What is Paul saying in this passage?
  • What does it mean to be “Christ’s letter”?
  • If someone who didn’t follow Jesus were to watch how you live, read your social media posts, and listened to what you said, what conclusions would they come to about Jesus?

Challenge Question

  • What is one thing you can do this week to speak the truth in love to someone who may need correcting?

Memory Verse

2 Corinthians 3:2

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone

Closing Prayer

Thank God for sending Jesus to give us the example for how we are supposed to live on this earth. Ask God to forgive us for those times we mess up. Pray for someone that you need to talk to this week, either to ask for forgiveness for how you’ve treated them, or to challenge them to turn from sin.
