Stop Going To Church
Beyond the Teaching

There are 168 hours in each week, and we get to spend ONE of those learning and worshipping together as a community, but we want to give you the tools to carry this into your daily life.
 //
Use the following guide to dive deeper into the text Ryan taught from and have discussion with those you do life with. You can do that all week in a Growth Group or Mission Team, with your Few, or over in our Digital Community (https://www.facebook.com/groups/OLHendo).

Dive in!

Open:

  • What is your favorite thing to learn about?
  • Is there anything in your life you love doing or talking about SO much that it impacts who you spend the most time with?

Read the Key Passage:

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. – Acts 2:42-47

Observe: What does it say?
Interpret: What does it mean?
Apply: What am I supposed to do with it?

Learn the Context:

  • This passage explores the very start of the early church by explaining what it WAS, and giving us some idea of what Jesus intended for his Church to be.
  • Check out these resources to learn some additional context on the early church:

Unpacking the Passage:

  • After exploring the tools above, what stands out to you about the early Church?
  • In what ways does the modern church parallel the first century Church? In what ways is this not the case?
  • What can we learn from the earliest expression of the Church that may help us understand our role better today?

Unpacking the Teaching:

  • If it is a key marker of a follower of Jesus to be a “learner,” how can you be more intentional about learning the nature and character of God?
  • As you learn more about Jesus and how to be like him, how can that help you become a more effective ambassador for him?
  • What does it look like in YOUR life to be “devoted to learning?”
  • Paul says, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” This is discipleship in its simplest form, and it is approachable to any follower of Jesus, new or old. What does it look like for you to help multiply disciples (or learners) in your everyday context?
  • We will talk more about being “devoted” as the series continues, but what comes to mind when you think about being DEVOTED to people–through fellowship and relationship?
  • What does it mean to be a “people of the Gospel of Jesus” to you?
  • Breaking through all the church “clichés” we’ve been addressing, what does it mean to you to “stop going to church?”

CHALLENGE:

STOP going to church, and BECOME ambassadors for Jesus everywhere you go through YOUR unique Made For This. Try to complete these two challenges this week, and let us know you are moving beyond the ONE hour in the church building!

  • This week, take ONE tangible step toward becoming more devoted to learning. Share with a friend or share on social media what step you took.
  • This week, make a physical list (pen and paper) of people in your life you will pray for, and take a few moments out of each day to pray for each of them by name. Reach out to one or more of the people on your list with a call or text and let them know you are thinking about and praying for them.
