WEEKLY INTRO
Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring Luke 12 in light of the subject of identity. In the story from the text, we find a man who Jesus calls a fool. Pastor Bret suggested that the man in the story made three critical errors in the following areas. 1 – Prayer. 2—Perspective. 3—Priorities. We have covered the errors or prayer and perspective. Today we will look at the error of priorities.
BIBLE ENGAGEMENT –LUKE 12:21-33
As you engage with the text, keep in mind how it speaks to the idea of priorities.
“22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”
BIBLE ENGAGMENT QUESTIONS
- What stands out to you from the text?
- How does the text speak to priorities?
- What do you learn about Jesus (His personality, practices, priorities, etc)?
THREE CRITICAL STEPS TO LIVING FULLY INTO THE IDENTITY GOD HAS FOR YOU
In this text, we can pull out three critical steps to living fully into the identity God has for you. Those three steps are . . . 1—STOP WORRYING. 2—SEEK. 3—GIVE.
- WORRY- Respond to the following quote from Corrie Ten Boom: “Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorry, it empty’s today of its strength.”
- SEEK – Have you ever lost something important that took some serious searching to find?
- SEEK – Jesus tells us to “seek the kingdom.” Thinking about the thing you lost from the last question, what do you do when you seek? How would you characterize it? (You focus, you notice things, you are always scanning)
- GIVE – In the text, Jesus says, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor.” The word poor there is actually translated “charity.” The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament defines “charity” as “The emotion roused by contact with an affliction which comes undeservedly on someone else.”
In light of this definition, what is Jesus asking us to do?
- What is one practical thing your group/team can do to be charitable together this holiday season?
