INTRO QUESTION

  1. Summer is beginning to wind down. What was one of your favorite memories/experiences over the summer?

SERIES INTRODUCTION

This week kicks off a brand-new series called POWER. Over the next four weeks, we will explore the spiritual gifts as described in 1 Corinthians and ask what spiritual power actually looks like in 2021.

  1. When you hear the word “spiritual power,” what is your gut reaction? (Does it bring up a memory? Does it bring about a sense of skepticism? What do you associate with that phrase?)

Sometimes a phrase like “spiritual power” can make us feel uncomfortable. However, our working definition of spiritual power is “God doing through YOU what only HE can do.”

  1. Based on our working definition, have you ever had an experience of “spiritual power?” Is so, share your story.

BIBLE ENGAGEMENT – READ 1 CORINTHIANS 12:1-11

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

BIBLE ENGAGMENT QUESTIONS

  1. What stands out to you from the text?

  1. What questions does this text raise for you?

  1. One of the great things about One Life is that our community is very diverse when it comes to matters of theology. Within the same community, we generally have people on both sides of the spectrum of any given subject. This rings true when it comes to spiritual gifts as well. Make a list of the gifts listed in this text. Are any of these hard for you to accept today? Why do you think that is?

FOUR WAYS TO “DE-WEIRDIFY” TALKING ABOUT SPIRITUAL POWER

If we are being honest, many of us have a hard time talking about experiences of spiritual power because we are afraid that we will come off sounding crazy. This is understandable given all of the seemingly exaggerated or inauthentic examples of these types of experiences throughout the years. This leaves us all wonder there is any way to talk about spiritual power without coming off as crazy??

On Sunday, Pastor Bret gave us “Four Ways to De-WeirdIfy Talking About Spiritual Power.” They were . . .

  • Let the text be the guide.
  • Accept that some of it IS weird.
  • Be open . . . but be skeptical.
  • Know the Purpose.

  1. What do you think most shaped your belief when it comes to the more charismatic spiritual gifts?

  1. Pastor Bret described a mature thinker as “soft in heart and sharp in mind.” What do you think this means in connection with spiritual gifts?

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 12:29-13:13. What does the text point to as the purpose of spiritual gifts?
