INTRO QUESTION

  1. What is your favorite thing to snack on in the summer? Or, what is your go-to dish if you have to bring something to a cookout?

BIBLE ENGAGEMENT — READ LUKE 10:13-16

13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[b16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

BIBLE ENGAGMENT QUESTIONS

  1. What stands out to you from this text?

  1. What questions does it raise?

  1. What does it reveal to you about Jesus (his personality, priorities, etc)?

CONTEXT CHALLENGE

One of the things that we have hit on over and over is the need to read Scripture in context. Solely reading verses 13-16 is kind of like parachuting into a conversation/experience already in progress. Look at the context surrounding verses 13-16, does it provide any clarity to what Jesus is talking about here? (Look at verses 1-16)

GOD-FEARING VS. GODLESS

The three towns mentioned negatively (Chorazin, Capernaum, and Bethsaida) in this text are sometimes referred to as the “evangelism triangle.” Jesus spent a lot of time ministering in these towns and they would have represented all of Judaism. On the flip side, the other two towns Jesus mentions were thought of as Godless towns. These were not Jewish communities.

What point to you think Jesus is trying to make by juxtaposing these two different types of towns? What is Jesus saying?

BELIEF VS. REPENTENCE

  1. In Verse 13, Jesus says, “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”

What is the difference between belief and repentance?

  1. Respond to the following quote. “If we are going to repent, there are going to have to be some things in our life that we allow to be shaped by Jesus.”

  1. What part of your life has been the most difficult to allow to be shaped by Jesus?
