5.16.21 HUDDLE
SUMMER GROUP/HUDDLE INFO: Beginning this week and continuing through August, the huddle resource will begin to look a little different. Rather than provide a full lesson, the summer huddle will simply provide a few questions for discussion. If your group continues to meet during the summer, use the extra time to recharge and refresh as a group.
INTRO
- What is one of your earliest memory?
- If you were talking to your high school self, what do you think your high school self would say it means to live a life of purpose? How has that changed over the years?
- Do you remember ever struggling with the question of purpose or is it something that you never thought much about?
- A recent CNBC article reported that in the 18–29-year-old population group, 1 in 4 has contemplated suicide. Does that surprise you? Why do you think that is?
BIBLE ENGAGMENT: LUKE 9:51-55
51 When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up, he determined[m] to journey to Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead of himself, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him. 53 But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” [n]
55 But he turned and rebuked them,[o] 56 and they went to another village.
- Many scholars claim this is the linchpin of Luke, the major turning point in Jesus’s ministry/life. In the Christian Standard version we just read, it says that Jesus “determined to journey to Jerusalem. A more literal translation would be that “he stiffened his face to go” or “he set his face.” What do you think this means? What is Luke saying?
- While it’s tough to know without reading the rest of the book, just for some fun pre-read guessing, how do you think the story would play out after a statement like this? What changes (if any) would you expect to see in Jesus’s attitude, personality, power, ministry, etc?
- Have you had a “set your face” moment?
CLOSING CHALLENGE: This week, try to read as much of post Luke 9:51 that you can. Make note of what you observe about Jesus? Does he act any different than he did prior to His “set your face” moment?
