INTRO QUESTION

  1. Are you a mountain or a beach person?

Leader Note: If we learn anything from Jesus’s life, it is that all the beach people are wrong! As we will see in today’s story, Jesus was a mountain person.

WEEKLY INTRO

For the last 8 weeks, we have been a series called “RESTORE: Rebuilding the Broken Soul.” Today marks our 9th and final week of the “Restore” series. Although our series is coming to a close, hopefully you will be able to hold on to some of the tools and practices that we engaged with throughout the series.

  1. What stood out to you from the RESTORE series?

  1. Was anything particularly helpful or restoring throughout the series?

  1. What is one thing/thought that you will continue to implement in your life moving forward?

BIBLE ENGAGEMENT—LUKE 9:28-36 (The Transfiguration)

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

BIBLE ENGAGEMNET QUESTIONS

  1. What stands out to you from the text?

  1. What do we learn about Jesus (His personality, practices, priorities, relationships, etc)?

RESTORED

On Sunday, Pastor Bret gave us three insights from the text that can help us when it comes to restoration.

  • If you want to be restored, plan prayerful rest
  • If you want to be restored, remember that you are dust
  • If you want to be restored, make your ambition greater revelation

PLAN PRAYERFUL REST

  1. What do you think it means to “plan prayerful rest?”

  1. Is planning prayerful rest something you do regularly, need some work on, or are terrible at?

  1. For those that have had some success, what has helped you be successful at this in the past? What tips do you have for others?

  1. Respond to the following quote from the American Journal of Epidemiology: “Compared with never praying or meditating. . . daily [prayer] practice was associated with greater positive affect, emotional processing, and emotional expression; greater volunteering, greater sense of mission, and more forgiveness; lower likelihoods of drug use. . . It was also possibly associated with greater life satisfaction and self-esteem, greater likelihood of being registered to vote, fewer depressive symptoms, and a lower risk of cigarette smoking.”

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE DUST (Remember Your Humanity)

  1. What do we see from Jesus’s closest followers in this text? How does it relate to the concept of “remembering your humanity?”

Leader Note: Jesus’s closest followers fell asleep (they do this at other times as well) and they had no idea what to do/say during this experience. All that to say, don’t be so hard on yourself. We are infallible humans; Jesus still invites us to experience amazing things just as he invited Peter, James, and John.

  1. We began this whole process of restoration by exploring the concept of lament. Embracing our humanity means starting right where we are, saying, “God, over the last year, I lost __________.” How would you complete that prayer?

MAKE YOUR AMBITION GREATER REVELATION

  1. How does increasing our view of God contribute to restoration?

  1. Sometimes we need reminded of who we worship. As a closing exercise, stand together and read Colossians 1:15-20. This text is known as the Christ hymn and is believed to be one of the earliest and most complete statements of who Jesus is.

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

IF TIME (10-15 min) have each person complete the “Spiritual Pathway Assessment” on the One Life Resources page and discuss the results.
