Jesus – Unstoppable In His Mission
Luke 13:31 ¶ At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”
Luke 13:32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.
Luke 13:33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’
Luke 13:34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
Luke 13:35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
Remember that day in high school health class that you had to sit and watch the video about trains? It was about 28 minutes of “don’t race trains, kids” to a bunch of people that were experiencing their first thrills of speed going 51 down the Lloyd Expressway. It would take me years of waiting at railroad crossings to fully grasp it. “Man, these things are huge and they take forever to stop!”
Jesus was a fully-loaded freight train going full steam into the Father’s will. When Herod, King of Judea, said, “Hey stop, I want to see—“ Jesus didn’t even blow the whistle. Jesus was too busy casting out demons and healing the poor and sick to talk to some early king.
Herod would eventually cross Jesus’ path again. This time it was during the scourging and the passion. Again, Jesus blew through that torture and death to live again with only a trophy-scar. This king who had killed entire villages and his own family members couldn’t stop Jesus.
The threat of Herod killing Him isn’t what bothers Jesus. He will recover from that. What bothers Jesus is when people don’t listen to God or His prophets.
If you see ducks at the right time of year, they take good care of their ducklings. You can find all kinds of videos online of mother ducks helping their babies across highways or out of sewers, etc. There are stories of barn fires where, after the wreckage was cleared, burnt up hens were found with living chicks under their wings.
Jesus wants to care for us like that. The number one requirement for a chick to be protected by its mother hen? It has to run back and stay close!
How many times God has reached out to me and I didn’t run back to Him for cover! His love for us is unstoppable. He is always calling out to us, blowing the whistle to let us know He’s closing in. As we are gathered close to Him, He will guard us and lead us beyond the show that Herod wanted. Jesus will direct us in an unstoppable life.
