INTRO

Welcome to week 3 of “Listen, Do, Repeat: How Faith Works.” In week 1, Pastor Ryan reminded us that “great faith requires managed expectations,” and that we are called to faithful obedience and not results. Last week, we crashed Simon the Pharisee’s dinner party in Luke 7 and witnessed how “love proceeds out of forgiveness.” This week we will be exploring Luke 8:1-3 and discussing how it points to the spiritual and the practical.

 

  1. How did you first get connected at One Life? What was it like the first time you walked in?

 

 

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT – LUKE 8:1-3

8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

 

  1. What stands out to you about this text? Read the text one more time and see if anything new or different stands out.

 

  1. What (if anything) does this Scripture reveal about the character, personality or habits of Jesus?

 

 

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT QUESTIONS

Context: Many people have heard of the 12 apostles, but Scripture also talks about Jesus sending out 72 followers on mission. In addition, Acts mentions that Jesus had 120 followers that were with him through his ministry. All this to say . . . Jesus traveled with an entourage.

 

  1. On Sunday, Bret said, “If there ever was a life that could have been a solo act, it would have been Jesus. But he did his life with a group of people.”

If Jesus is God in the flesh, he could have come to earth as anything he wanted. He could have been a King or a military conqueror . . . He could have came back to 2020 as a social media superstar. Why do you think Jesus came the way he did, and what does it reveal about what is important in life?

 

  1. How does the text highlight the value of women?

Note: During this time/place, women were considered little more than property. They were not allowed to pursue any type of higher education beyond basic reading, writing and learning to run a household. They were not allowed to participate in public prayer at the temple and they most definitely were not allowed to follow a rabbi. Any respectable rabbi would never allow it.

 

  1. How does this text speak to both spiritual power and the practical?

 

  1. When you look at this text, you could say that Jesus drew in or sparked change in the women through spiritual power (cured evil spirits and diseases), but they were formed through the practical . . . following Jesus, learning from him, and supporting him practically.

 

Through what practical way(s) has God formed you over the last year?

 

  1. Jesus was clearly a miracle worker. It would have been easy for him to miraculously provide for himself. For instance, multiple times Jesus miraculously fed 4,000 and 5,000 people. Yet, other times we see Jesus ask his disciples to go get supplies or food. In the same way, Jesus could have supported himself but chose to allow others to support him. Why do you think Jesus did this? How was he using it to spiritually form others?

 

 

SPIRITUAL FORMATION PATH

When you look at how Jesus formed his disciples, he did it both through teaching and apprenticing them. It was about both knowledge and action. Two-thousand years later, we are formed the same way . . . through both knowledge and action. While we are called to incorporate both into our lives, God’s timing and leading is different for all of us.

 

  1. Look over the Spiritual Formation Path. Where do you sense that God is leading you right now? What step should you take this year?
