How To Pray to Get What You Want
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
If you then, although you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
Jesus taught the disciples the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ and is still teaching them things about prayer. Not what to say, but how to say it!
Just last night at dinner, we had a junior policeman help out with a finger pointing “He opened his eyes while we were praying!” From there we got to eat spaghetti and talk about all of the different ways our friends pray, and how God loves the conversation every time.
(I forgot to figure out how he could telepathically tell the other kid’s eyes were open if his were closed. Mysterious.)
I would pray whatever stupid way you wanted me to for the rest of my life if I could just fully grasp these words of Jesus.
The Father wants to give THE HOLY SPIRIT to whoever will ask Him. He wants to give it more than we want to ask for it!
So here we go.
It’s Thanksgiving Week, which means it’s also Black Friday week.
I’ve already got a ton of emails about sales and GIFTS.
What if every time we thought about gifts, saw a sign with gifts, made a list of gifts, bought gifts, or wondered about gifts, we stopped for 2 seconds and prayed:
”God, give me your Holy Spirit”
Yes, by correct pneumatology you already have It as a seal from the moment you believed that Christ died for your sins, but at the same time, here is Jesus, whom all of the listeners believe in, telling them to ask.
So let’s ask. Give me Your Spirit, Lord. In the lines, in the traffic, when you sit those fake present decorations up under the tree, etc. Ask.
An old friend said if you want to learn how to pray, ask God for the things He says to ask for in the scriptures. We know clearly that God wants to answer those prayers because He says explicitly to pray those things.
Ask, seek, and knock on God’s door for the Holy Spirit. He is so anxiously and joyfully waiting to hear from you.
