INTRO QUESTION
- What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year? Will it look any different than previous years?
- Pastor Bret challenged us to read The Sermon on the Plain from Luke 6 everyday over the last few weeks. What was that experience like for you? Were there days it affected you more than others? (Acknowledge that some may have only read it once or twice and that is ok)
READ LUKE 6:17-49
In light of the intense pressure and rising temperature in culture that the election has brought on, read Luke 6:17-49 together. This is both an act of unity and one that reminds us that we are first citizens of the Kingdom of God.
- In light of all that has transpired over the last week, what from this text stands out to you?
Read Luke 6:36-37
“Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.”
- Respond to the following quote from Pastor Bret. “Mercy assumes that there is such as thing as right and wrong.” Do you agree? What makes you say that?
- Knowing that mercy assumes that there is such a thing as right and wrong, while at the same time recognizing Jesus’s words on judging others, how are Jesus followers supposed to act in response to this teaching?
CLOSING THOUGHT
- Respond to the following quote from pastor and apologist Tim Keller, “If your god never disagrees with you, you might just be worshipping an idealized version of yourself.”
- Think of someone that has love you well. What characterized that love?
