INTRO QUESTION

  1. What is your favorite thing about Fall?
  2. Are you the type of person that grieves the loss of summer or can’t wait to get on to colder weather?

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT- JOHN 14:6

Read John 14:6 in a few different versions and then answer the following questions.

The Voice Translation

I am the path, the truth, and the energy of life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you know Me, you know the Father. Rest assured now; you know Him and have seen Him.

The Message Translation

6-7 Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him. You’ve even seen him!”

New Living Translation

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.[c] From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

  1. Why is this considered one of Jesus’s most controversial statements? What is he saying?

  1. What does it mean that for many, Jesus being the only way is not a logical problem, it is an emotional problem?

VIDEO—WATCH Reasonable Faith: “How Can Jesus Be The Only Way?”

  1. What stands out to you from this video?

  1. What is the logical problem of pluralism? (The view that all religions are equally true and valid)

Leader Note: One possible answer among many is that various religions make radically different truth claims, often conflicting, from one another. It is logically impossible for two conflicting claims to both be true.

  1. How is the claim, “anyone who believes that Christianity is true and every other view is wrong is arrogant”. . . a self-defeating argument?

Leader Note: This statement is making a truth claim them self. Even more, it is  perhaps the most exclusive truth claim saying that they are right and every other religion is wrong.

  1. A Genetic Fallacy tries to invalidate a view by showing how a person came to hold the view. For instance, many people claim that religion is culturally relative. That is, if you were born in Pakistan you would be a Muslim and if you were born in Ireland, you would be a Catholic. How did the video respond to this fallacy? What example did it give?

Leader Note: The video made the point that the truth of a view is independent of how a person came to believe it. Then, it used the example of people in ancient Greece believing the sun orbited around the earth.

APPLICATION

The main reason that Jesus being the only way remains an emotional problem for us is because we all know amazing people who are loving, kind, generous, etc, but do not follow Jesus. Our fear surrounding this thought is generally tied to one of two things. 1) not trusting that Jesus is the perfect judge, and 2) not trusting that God is still and always at work. One way to gain trust in both of these areas is to share and hear stories of how God is working. This section will be designed to help build one another up by sharing our own personal stories.

  1. Have you heard any stories in your circle of relationships about anyone having an encounter/experience with God . . . possibly that led them from unbelief to belief?

  1. If you are a follower of Jesus, what was the final “straw” that pushed you over the line to belief?

  1. Have you ever had a marked moment with God . . . a time that stands out above others as a unique and deeply personal encounter with God where you knew he was at work, even though others around would not have been able to tell?

  1. Respond to the following quote by C.S. Lewis. “Here is another thing that used to puzzle me. Is it not frightfully unfair that this new life should be confined to people who have heard of Christ and been able to believe in Him? But the truth is God has not told us what His arrangements about the other people are. We do know that no man can be saved except through Christ; we do not know that only those who know Him can be saved through Him. But in the meantime, if you are worried about the people outside, the most unreasonable thing you can do is to remain outside yourself. Christians are Christ’s body, the organism through which He works. Every addition to that body enables Him to do more. If you want to help those outside you must add your own little cell to the body of Christ who aloe can help them. Cutting off a man’s fingers would be an odd way of getting him to do more work.”
