INTRO QUESTION

  1. When you look back over your life, who do you think of as an amazing representative of people of faith? Why?

  1. Did anyone in your life growing up model (or maybe you caught them doing it) any Christian practices? Perhaps parents/grandparents/teachers, etc? What did you think about it?

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT—Read Luke 6:12-16

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

WHO WERE THE APOSTLES? –Group Activity

When it comes to the apostles, they were definitely not some kind of “Dream Team” when Jesus selected them. As a group, try to recall stories/insights from scripture that help paint a picture of who each of the disciples were.

  1. Simon Peter __________________

Leader Note: Lots of faith but always putting his foot in his mouth or acting reckless . . . walked on water, but also cut off someone’s ear.

  1. Matthew ________________

Leader Note: A tax collector when Jesus called him. Which meant that he was working for (and benefitting from) the oppressors of the Jews.

  1. Thomas _______________

Leader Note: Nicknamed doubting Thomas for a reason. Refused to believe the resurrection until he saw Jesus for himself

  1. Simon the Zealot ______________

Leader Note: Have someone look up what a Zealot was . . . would have been interesting to have Matthew and Simon the Zealot in the same room.

  1. Judas Iscariot _____________

Leader Note: Most people know Judas’s role—gave Jesus up to be caught.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. What kind of picture does this list paint about the kind of people Jesus is willing to use?

  1. If fixing our eyes on Jesus means seeing people as Jesus sees them, how does this list inform the way we see people?

  1. Think of one person in your life that you have not been seeing the way Jesus sees. Make it a priority this week to withhold judgement and to speak encouragement to them. Share who came to mind if you are comfortable.

  1. Knowing the outcome of the majority of these apostles tells us that Jesus is in the business of reshaping the hearts of mankind. In what way is Jesus reshaping your heart these days? What areas of your life do you still want Jesus to reshape?
