6.21.20 Huddle

Onelifechurch   -

Sunday the 21st was Father’s Day so we want to open up this week with a couple of questions about dads.

  1. If you had to describe your dad with one word or sentence, what would it be? Why?

  1. Is the metaphor of God as “father,” a hindrance to your faith or helpful to your faith? Why?

SCRIPTURE ENGAGMENT—Read Luke 4:14-22

14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[a]

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT QUESTIONS

  1. What stands out to you from the text?

  1. What questions/confusion does it bring up?

  1. What habits do you see Jesus practicing in this text? What would these “practices” look like today? How would they be expressed?

  1. This text is one of many that illustrate Jesus’s high view of the Old Testament. Do you think the Old Testament is still important? Why?

READ VERSES 18-19 AGAIN

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[a]

  1. How does Jesus’s mission (as stated in verse 18-19) speak to our culture today?

  1. Read vs. 21—What is Jesus saying in this verse? What claim is he making?

  1. Jesus’s message in Luke 4 is good news. However, in the message Sunday, Bret said “to receive Jesus’s message as good news, we must 1st recognize ourselves as poor.” What does that mean? How do we do it? How is that message counter-cultural?
