Praying for Us to See Jesus As He Is
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
If you have a paper bible, you might see some little numbers and notes off to the edge of the page like these.
Normal free bibles don’t usually have them, but study bibles do. They are cross-references that the publisher thinks are related or in some way elaborate on what you are reading.
I’m not sure you can see it in my picture, but the first one also shows that this is a great way to round out your theology. Too often, people read a single verse and then make a law about it without considering the context or other scriptures that elaborate on the same topic. Let’s dive into that note about 2 Corinthians 4:4.
‘In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.’ 2 Corinthians 4:4
You can see why they put these together. They both say that Jesus is the “image of God.” But now we get an intercessory prayer spin on it.
People are being blinded in their minds from seeing:
- the light of the gospel (Because there is darkness in the world, and the Gospel brings light and hope to that darkness.)
- the glory of Christ (How great is He really? When you see it, it changes everything. Seeing the Glory of Christ is to see Him as the true Son of God that He is!)
- that Christ is the image of God (We can look at the things that Jesus said and did and from that know what God is like. Jesus is the image of God.)
I want to pray that I would see those things!
And so let us. Let us pray that the god of this world, the devil, would no longer be successful in blinding people’s minds. Let us pray that people would see the light of Christ and come to know, deep down in their souls, that He is the spitting image of God.
Let us also pray for all of the people that ‘just don’t know’ and won’t commit to a full faith in Jesus. He’s not just a wise teacher, He’s the son of God, the one and only creator God of the universe. Pray for the light of the gospel, the glory of Christ, the image of God to be made known to more and more people.
