He Created it and He Knows How it Works
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
In talking about Jesus, we have to remember that He wasn’t just a man. Yes, He fully limited Himself and lived life as a man. Yes, He felt pain and sorrow, emotionally as well as physical hurts, but He was also God. He had to walk around and was limited by space and time. Granted, He could do that whole walk on water thing, but otherwise…
At the same time, Jesus is mentioned throughout the Scriptures as the creation force in God. This just shows how much the Father is in the Son, the Son is in the Spirit, and the Spirit is in the Father. We think of God the Father as the Creator, but John 1 says “by Him all things were made” and He is talking about Jesus.
It’s better than a messed up math problem, it’s a divine mystery. There is only one God, but even His way of creation involves the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (See the plural uses of ‘Us’ and ‘We’ in Genesis!)
As the creator of all things, Jesus knows how everything works. He knows that everything has been stolen over to sin so that it’s all broken and that everything in creation is longing for redemption. Even in it’s fallen state, Jesus knows what makes things tick and what makes them change.
This puts Christians in a uniquely powerful position. This might be why Christianity has lasted so long. Beyond all world leaders and governments, beyond all natural disasters or technological marvels, Christ still reigns over it all. Our faithful great-grandparents didn’t have to fear the atomic bomb. Our faithful great great great great great grandparents didn’t have to fear the potato famine.
Christ, as Master Genius Architect Creator, knows how all of it works, and even though it’s all broken, He wants to know us in the midst of it. Above all of His creation, He likes us the most and wants to do the most and spend the most time with us. Nothing else, except angels, is created to live forever. He created us in a very special way so that beyond all of the brokenness and fallen-ness, we can be repaired and remade to be with Him, perfect for eternity.
