“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Jesus is the point of everything we could ever do that would be good. If it doesn’t come out of our life in Him or point to our life in Him, it’s disposable and it won’t count for anything. That’s what Jesus is trying to drive home here. In Him, we are capable of anything that He would ever want us to do. Apart from Him, we can merely exist.
As we make our New Year’s resolutions and embark on exercise and Bible reading and more, remember that Jesus is the center of everything that lasts.
