If the Truth is Easy to Miss, Keep Seeking Him
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Jesus has just told them some things about His death and His betrayal by Judas. They are still trying to get it, which is easy to understand. Consider when your wife tells you 3 things to get at the store and you get hung up on whether you like the first thing on the list or not. You barely hear the second thing and you can just forget about getting the third thing. It’s easy for us to read through the scriptures and wonder “How did they miss that!?” but we have the luxury of knowing the whole story and reading it as slow as we want.
That is also part of the reason why they ask so many times about seeing the Father, the way to the Father, and how to know the Father. Like Naaman in 2 Kings 5, it seemed like knowing God would be more elaborate, dramatic, or difficult than just knowing Jesus. But Jesus, in His grace, explains how easy it is over and over again.
- If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father.
- Knowing me is to know the Father.
- I am the actual way to God, so if you have tried other ways to get to God, know that God has reached out to you with Me, and I’m the way.
For some, this would be the last missing link to 3 years of amazing ministry. After asking over and over “Who is this man?!” when the storms were calmed or when a mother received her dead son back from the dead, Jesus gives the answer and we still don’t get it.
If you know me, you know the Father.
That simple statement alone is enough to make us cast off every other thing that we’d want to know — like can communion be gluten-free, or what a liturgy must contain, and run after knowing Jesus. To know Jesus, in His own words (!) is to know the way to God. To know Jesus is to know God Himself like Moses or Abraham knew God.
Even if He has to explain it to us eleven or a thousand times, sit with Him and listen. Eventually, we’ll get it and know Christ our savior enough to make it through our day and then come back tomorrow to listen to Him again.
