Huddle // The Table Week 6
Huddle time is an opportunity for you to connect to each other and grow in faith. The below questions are just a resource for you to use or start from. Don’t feel like you have to use them all or rush through good discussion.
What did discipline look like in your house growing up?
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase ‘church discipline’?
Read Matthew 18 (All of it)
How does reading these passages on church discipline, within the context of the entire chapter, help you better understand it’s purpose, and what it should look like?
Is there anyone who can speak correction into your life?
What is it about that relationship that gives that person permission to do that?
What are some of the reasons we struggle to put the practice of church discipline into action?
In Jesus’ relationship with His disciples, you see a pattern of comfort, encouragement, and correction. Jesus does this out of love and calls us to do the same. We are called to be proactive and selfless in how we approach people. Think of how a loving parent values and corrects a child.
How much does relationship play a role in living this out? Is it possible to do church discipline, as Matthew 18 describes it, outside of being in a relationship?
Matthew 18:17 says that if they refuse to listen, treat them like a gentile or a tax collector.
How would have Jesus’ disciples, who were 1st-century Jews, heard this?
Jesus was known, during His time, to be someone who hung out with sinners and tax collectors. Does this help you understand the ultimate goal of church discipline?
Pray as a group or team that God would grow you into the types of relationships where loving correction can happen when needed. Pray that you would have hearts that receive correction. Pray that you would all see others with the value that Christ sees in them. Pray that, in living this out, your group or team would be an example of Christ’s love to your sphere of influence.
