A Very Happy Shield

Dan Sullivan   -

O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
many are saying of my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.
I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.
I lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.
Psalms 3:1–6 ESV Read More

One of the most moving ways to read the Psalms is in chronological order with 1–2 Samuel and the life of David. Some of these are the prayers he prayed as he was “a man after God’s heart” but had to deal with treacherous men in the world.
We might not have men chasing us with swords through mountain caves this morning, but depression, discouragement, comparison, envy, lust, pride, greed, and bitterness are all enemies that have been sent out by the devil to ruin you today! It takes a work of God in our souls to bring us to a point to say “I will not be afraid of the many thousands…who have set themselves against me.”
The Lord is with us to help us rest. He lifts us up and lies us down gently. He is our salvation and our shield, and that brings Him a lot of contagious joy.
