Chatty Shepherds with a Story they Can’t Keep to Themselves
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The shepherds went to see what the angel told them about right away. The angels were unbelievable. It was unbelievable that the shepherds were allowed to live after seeing such a thing. When they went and saw Joseph and Mary and the legendary baby in a manger, they knew they could tell Joseph and Mary what they had seen. Joseph and Mary probably laughed and loved those shepherds for their encouragement. They knew this baby was the Son of God, but it would be hard to believe when you didn’t even have a good bed for a baby.
They were encouraged and then they passed their encouragement on to these new parents. The new parents encouraged these guys in return and sent them on their way rejoicing. This is what happens when people experience Jesus face to face. When you fully believe, and all doubt is blown out of the water, it changes the look on your face and the words you use. You aren’t afraid to evangelize people that already believe because you love to celebrate and talk about what the Lord has done.
The shepherds’ joy overflowed out of them as they went back out to the fields. Townspeople would be confused about why the shepherds were in town. It was lambing season; they should be out watching their flocks by night, not running them through their little village! There would have been a lot of questions, and those guys were overjoyed to give an answer.
We saw angels! A baby has been born that is the savior!
You can be certain that some sort of revival happened in those shepherds that night. Some would be grown men, but some would be young boys. They could reasonably grow up and be old enough to hear the teachings of that baby when He grew up to be a man. They could tell stories about Jesus their entire lives, just like they did as they walked out of town that night. It isn’t noted how well they argued about the existence of that baby or the presence of angels.
It is noted how they went out praising and glorifying God with the story of what God had done. May we too be so excited and well-known for such things.
