Bringing God and People Together Could only be Done on God’s Terms
[8] “putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. [9] But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
[10] For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. [11] For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
Hebrews 2:8–11 ESV
God in His holiness reached out to people throughout the old testament. He spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, judges, prophets, men, and women. When God spoke to Moses on My. Sinai, the people were so scared they said “Don’t let God speak to us! Only you, Moses. You tell us what He said.”
They were right to be afraid. Alistair Begg said we should not be “all-matey with the Almighty.” God’s holiness is such that to be near Him with sin is certain death. That’s why Uzzah died a few days ago when he touched the ark. He came into direct contact with God’s presence with no sacrifice to shield him. We should take Him seriously.
This passage says “at present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see Him…” The world is messed up, and if we can’t approach God for help, all we have is despair. Jesus came to be with us so that we could approach God. As we are suffering in a fallen world, we can look at Jesus’s life and see that He too suffered in our world.
By suffering just like us and winning, Jesus won for all of us. Knowing that your mom hated algebra but still became an architect can help you through that next proof. Hearing the man say “You don’t have to call me Mr. Seymore, you can call me Jeff.” Draws us closer on his terms.
Jesus did all of that and more. So now, though we don’t see the world submitting to Him, we can look to Him and see that He’s fixing it on His terms. By bringing sons and daughters to glory, Jesus is saving the world in His best and wise way.
