Because 50 Day 43

Scripture Reading: Luke 11:11-13
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for  a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Today’s Prayer:
God, I want more of You.
Going Deeper:
God gives us things we can see to help us understand things we cannot see. We talk about this often in the context of communion or baptism, but it was a fundamental teaching style of Jesus. Jesus would use parables and illustrations to help his audience clearly see the point he was trying to make. In the passage above, what does Jesus use as an illustration to teach us about prayer? What is the good gift that the Father gives to us according to Jesus?
Too often we struggle to believe that God can and will really answer our prayers. We think that our request might be beneath Him. Yet St. Augustine wrote, “For what would he not now give to sons when they ask, when he has already granted this very thing, namely, that they might be sons?” When we understand that God has made us His children, does it not make sense that He would delight to meet our needs?
A couple of nights ago, my oldest daughter had a friend spending the night. We had been working at our new house all day. We went home around 8PM and were going to grab dinner on the way. They really wanted Azzip but my wife didn’t want to get out of the car covered in paint and wait in line. They called me and guess what I did: I waited in line. Why? Because I love Azzip? Not that night; I was eating something different. I waited in line because I love my daughter and it brings me joy to grant her request. In an even greater way, the heavenly Father delights to hear your voice asking Him to act. And nothing makes Him happier than for you to ask for more of Him. As you pray today, ask for more of Him in your life.
