Because 50 Day 42

Scripture Reading: John 16:7-15
7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Today’s Prayer:
God, allow us to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit that we may fulfill the promises that Jesus made.

Going Deeper:
When my wife and I were dating, the vast majority of the time we were in a long-distance relationship. In fact, for all but a few months we were more than 232 miles apart (apparently I still remember the distance from my apartment to hers all these years later). When we would say goodbye to one another after time together, it would be depressing. Why? Because we enjoyed each other’s company and we brought joy to one another.
In John 16, the disciples are grieving the idea that Jesus would leave them. They had no clue the plan that was about to unfold before them but they were concerned. Why did Jesus explain that it was better for them if he went away? In the passage above, what are some of the functions of what the Holy Spirit does in our lives and in the world around us? What is the primary sin that the Holy Spirit is going to correct according to verse 9? When we have a faulty understanding of who Jesus is, it effects everything about how we live our lives. If you can only get one issue right, get that one right because it will bleed over into the rest of your life.
A primary role of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus Christ. What is unique is that is not just the role of the Spirit; it is our role as well. We are called as followers of Jesus to make much of him to a hurting world. What is one way that you can do that in the neighborhood that you live in? How can you help your neighbors experience Jesus? How can you glorify Jesus to those who live the closest to you?
