Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Questions for Reflections:
One of the strengths of Jesus’ teaching style was that he used every day images to communicate profound spiritual truths. In this passage, what did Jesus use to illustrate his message? Why is the broad road so attractive? DA Carson in his commentary notes that the broad road is “spacious and accommodate the crowd and their baggage.”
My wife’s family lives in northern Indiana. For the past 20 years, we’ve travelled up US 41 on our way through Indianapolis because it was the only practical option. Last year, a new section of I69 opened between Crane Naval and Bloomington. It was a game changer. Why? The road is bigger, faster and smoother.
Jesus says that we often make the same choice in our spiritual lives as well. He understands that the way of the kingdom may be more narrow. Just because the road is narrow, does not mean that the road is leading to the wrong destination. What are some areas where you’ve noticed that Jesus’ path has been tougher for you to follow? How do you handle this tension in your life? Who helps keep you on the correct path? Is there an area of your life where you may have drifted off-course? If so, spend time in prayer asking God to redirect you back onto His path for your life.
