Scripture Reading: Luke 2:36-38
36There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Questions for Reflection:
There was a lady that was the temple daily. In fact, she was there so often that Luke reports that  she never left the temple. Who was this women? What does Luke report about her life? Why do you think that he includes details like which tribe she was a part of and who her father was? It’s possible that he included these details to help others who wanted to substantiate the story.
Anna is another example of a person who lived their life for the glory of God. We are not told how old she was when she married but most likely she would have been between the ages of twelve to fifteen years old. After being married for seven years, her husband dies. At the age of 19-22, Anna found herself a widow. In her grief, she turned to worship. In her worship, she learned to listen for God’s voice and direction.
As Joseph and Mary enter with the infant baby, most of those in the temple just continue about their business. The professionals, the Levites and the priests, they did not pause from their duties. Rabbis gathered in porticos to teach their disciples and others who wanted to listen. Traders sold pigeons, doves and livestock for sacrifices. Only Simeon and Anna, both “very old,” truly appreciated what was happening before them. God does not just reveal himself to pastors and priests. He reveals Himself to all who will listen. Anna provides us with a powerful example of a life devoted to worshipping God and listening to His voice. How can you worship God today? How can you make time to listen to His voice? Spend time today in worship, praising God for who He is and what He has done in your life. But then listen as well. Prayer should be a two-way conversation between you and God.
