Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:21-26
21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
Questions for Reflection:
Paul knew that his imprisonment at the time he was writing could lead to execution. He was conflicted about what he should wish for. According to Paul, what would happen if he died? And what would happen if he lived? Which do you think Paul wanted more? Why?
For Paul, the whole of life was Christ. He says this clearly in verse 21, “to live is Christ.” Everything he would do in this life, his hope and dreams, his work and ministry, his love and friendships would be guided by Christ. Jesus Christ was not merely Paul’s Savior; He was the Lord of Paul’s life. Is that true in your life? Have you surrendered every aspect of your life (your relationships, your occupation, your finances, your time) to God? Does He call the shots in every aspect of your life?
