Read Hebrews 12:1-13

Discipline Definition -- The Root and Meanings of discipline. Discipline comes from discipulus, the Latin word for pupil, which also provided the source of the word disciple (albeit by way of a Late Latin sense-shift to “a follower of Jesus Christ in his lifetime”).

Disciple Definition -- Root Word -- Old English discipul (fem. discipula), Biblical borrowing from Latin discipulus "pupil, student, follower," said to be from discere "to learn" [OED, Watkins], from a reduplicated form of PIE root *dek- "to take, accept" (see decent).

Does knowing that the word discipline and the word disciple come from the same root word change how you see it?

In your own life, do you ever feel like you have received discipline from God?

Bret talked about the 5 Characteristics Of Loving Discipline

1. It has boundaries

Have you ever received discipline when you were younger that caused discouragement?

2. Is painful

When you think about discipline -- do you think of it as a positive or negative thing?

How has this passage from Hebrews helped or maybe changed your perception of discipline?

3. Is temporary

What’s the difference between wrath and discipline?

4. Is as we think best

What was a moment when you as a parent or your parents/caregivers failed at discipline? Do you have a story of when it worked out as intended?

5. Has a goal

Hebrews 12:10 said that God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.

Has there ever been anything you were doing, that you got caught for that you were disciplined for, and looking back now it produced something beautiful in you? How did it draw you closer to God?

  • At what moment did you feel closest to Christ this week?

  • What is God teaching you through His word and how are you responding?

  • What are your plans for next week in the areas of: prayer, bible study and sharing Christ's love?
