Intro Question

  1. Who is someone you would consider a generous person? What makes them generous?

Lesson Intro

This week we started a new series, Excel. We are going to be talking about how to become extraordinary in the things that matter. Throughout this series we will also be talking about giving, and why that is such an important theme throughout the Bible.

Bible Engagement Luke 21:1-4 CSB

1 He looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

  1. What stands out from this text?
  2. What questions does it raise?
  3. What do you learn about Jesus (His practices, priorities, personality, etc.)?
  4. What is Jesus teaching His followers about generosity?
  5. What does it mean to give out of poverty and not surplus?

Topic Questions

  1. Why might some people have a problem when churches talk about giving?
  2. Why did Jesus talk about giving?
  3. What’s the difference between giving some money and being generous with our lives?
  4. If we aren’t generous in the way we live, what might that show about our own character?

Bible Engagement 2 Corinthians 8:5b, 7; 9:7

8:5b Instead, they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us by God’s will.

8:7 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, speech, knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love for us—excel also in this act of grace.

9:7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.

  1. When it comes to generosity, why does it have to start with giving ourselves first to the Lord?
  2. What is Paul telling the Corinthians to excel in? How can we, as followers of Jesus, also excel in these things?
  3. What does it look like to excel in generosity?
  4. Why do we sometimes give reluctantly or out of compulsion? How can we make sure we are cheerful when we give?
